The heart of Japanese nature worshipping
With its beautiful sloping lines, Mt.Fuji stands in dignity with a sea of clouds nestling around it or with a clear blue sky at times. Fuji is a sacred mountain with profound meaning in Japanese culture. In its presence one senses a cultural, historical, and spiritual significance in which a deep reverence is felt.
In days of great antiquity, Fuji was considered as a deity where no man could trespass, and its worshipers would offer prayers from a distance. Centuries later, with the introduction of Buddhism and the influence of esoteric Buddhism, devotion was expressed by climbing the mountain. And by the Edo period, there were countless worshippers and groups of pilgrims named “Fuji-ko,” who dreamed of climbing Fuji at least once in a lifetime. Sengen-jinjya, a magnificent Shinto shrine, situated at the foot, has served as the doorway to the sacred mountain and warmly welcomes visitors. Although Fuji is striking when seen close-up, it is equally spectacular viewed from the deep forest of Aokigahara. Also known as Jukai, ''the sea of forest,” Aokigahara offers the sense of solidity and serenity, which has inspired many artists and the view is memorable. Awed by the breathtaking presence of Fuji, this is often a moment of deep silence.
