Walk Japan Heritage, the trace of a journey from 400 years ago
Towering cedar trees stand parallel along a cobblestone path. Soft light streams through and the atmosphere is fresh and sweet. People have used this path for over 400 years, from feudal lords to merchants and pilgrims. Experience a true sense of history surrounded by nature and meetings with locals who quietly protect this timeless treasure.
Running through the heart of Hakone is the Old Tokaido Way built by the Tokugawa Shogunate in the early 17C. The road connected the cultural and imperial capital of Kyoto with the economic and political capital of Tokyo. Depicted in literature or Ukiyo-e paintings, Tokaido Way has significant cultural importance, and Hakone Hachiri has an especially well-preserved authentic value.
Imagine the elaborate processions of lords in a litter accompanied by samurai or travelers walking the mountainous path. The checkpoint overlooking Lake Ashi was once renowned for its notorious strictness. Recently reconstructed based on historical evidence, it stands awaiting you. One is transported into a different time whilst walking these paths. This is especially true when visiting the Amazake Chaya. Enjoy the same menu of mochi and sweet amazake made by the 13th generation of the founders. The warm welcome by locals remains unchanged over the centuries.
