Saijyouji Temple and Satoyama -a nostalgic Japanese countryside
Tour Details

A nostalgic Japanese countryside

The magnificent Saijyouji Temple and nostalgic scenery of timeless beauty are to be found in Ashigara in Kanagawa, only a stone's throw from Tokyo. Streams, ponds and verdant rice paddies are aside traditional houses. The authentic scenery is adorned by bamboo groves and trees of various tints and hues.

The journey starts by taking the single-track Daiyuzan train and bus used by locals. Glimpsing everyday life, you arrive at the lowest gate of Saijyoji, a temple of Soto Zen Buddhism built 1394. Walking up from Nio-mon gate, the highest temples are not yet visible. Towering cedar trees and over 600 stupas line the stone path. Figures of legendary Tengu, guardian deities, and Holy animal protect and welcome visitors. Saijyoji has over 30 buildings and stands in its own extensive grounds of 128 hectares. Set in deep history, the heart is gently moved by the spiritual presence of Saijyoji in the beauty of each season.

For generations, people have lived in rural nature surrounded by unspoiled scenery. However, it is becoming rarer to find an authentic lifestyle so deeply engraved in the hearts of Japanese people. Discover another aspect of authenticity by visiting nearby Seto Shuzo with its 150 years of history.
